Digipak Design
During are last lesson, we as a group decided to come together, and draft a design of what are digipak will include and look like. First we decided to draft an estimated real sized template (roughly 13cm by 13cm) so we could get the most ideal viewpoint of how everything will be placed and put together.
Front - The front (bottom right), will include a image of a red throne were possibly Callum will be sitting. We are yet undecided wether it will be a direct or indirect image, or if callum will even be on the front, however we do know that the chair will be included. We also want a light positioned above it as a symbol of hope and guidance.
Back - For the back cover (middle bottom) we want it divided into two different images. We want it to look like something has been torn away from the cover which reveals half of Callum's face where the list of songs should be. The opposite image where the list of songs is, will be a long stretch of road. This symbolises his search and journey for a role model.
CD (middle top) - We are going to have an iconic symbol of the rap genre, as well as a convention, which is a religious image of a cross. This symbolises religion and culture, in urban environments and the meaning it has within rap. We want to create a shadow effect on the cross which appears behind it, as it will appeal to the spectators.
Top right - For this image, we want to create something that conforms to the ideas of Richard Dyers star theory. Therefore, we have chosen to have Callum (doing some sort of pose) wearing his bling in a long or medium shot of him. This will produce an image of what the star is like (rich and wealthy) to the spectator, therefore will create the common ideologies that rap stars have.
Eminem's montage |
Bottom left - We have chosen to use an image which shows the themes of rap. This image specifically shows poverty, as it will feature an old abandoned garage lot which is overgrown. This will be a good image with a black and white overlay, which also conforms to raps conventions of colour.
Colour - Overall, we have chosen to use three main colours, white, black and red. These are all conventions of the rap genre, and have also been used in drafts of our magazine advert that other members have started to design. Therefore, we wish to keep the colour scheme consistent throughout are work.
Audience Feedback
Positives
Fraser - The design and structure of the draft is extremely good. I specifically like the montage of shots that are used for the top left, as we can get an insight of the artists life before listing to the music they have created. I also like the back cover, as the idea of two images being separated and spilt apart is creative and artistic.
Tom - I particularly like the references to the conventions of the rap genre, with items such as the cross being used for the CD compartment which shows culture and religion, as well as luxury and success through the use of bling in the top right section of the digipak.
Reece - My favourite part is the idea behind the front cover. It's very detailed, and has potential to increase the quality of the digipak. The lighting and the location of the chair suits perfectly, and could potentially link to the dark background of the artist, but the chair could represent the positive and the light in his life.
Improvements
Fraser - I feel like in some shots there is not much going on and could look quite bland and boor the audience. However, the simplicity touch could work in your favour depending on how well you pull it off.
Tom - You could include more colours as you have only listed three which is black, white and red. Although, the colour choice is good, as they are conventional colours to your genre.
Reece - You could annotate more around each section, as its unclear in some places what kind of shot you want. Doing this will also help you, as when you come to actually shooting for the digipak, you will know exactly what you want, and how your going to do it.
